The Andronicus Icon of the Mother of God
22 October / 4 November

The date this Icon appeared is not recorded in its history.  Its name has to do with the history of Patriarch Andronicus III Paleologos.

In 1347, the Greek ruler donated it to the Monemvasia Monastery, which later fell to Turkish attack in 1821. Bishop Agapios rescued the Icon.  Before his death, he bequeathed the Holy Icon to Russia.  Beginning in 1868, the Icon was in the Winter Palace, and as of 1877 was in the Holy Trinity Cathedral near Petrograd.  Later it was taken to the Kazan Convent in the Tver district.

The Icon has a centuries-old recorded history.  Unfortunately, its fate in recent decades is unknown.  As a rule, holy things do not perish.  We are not given to know where the Holy Icon will re-appear.  However, we should know about the Icon, especially since many copies of it are extant.

In the Icon, the Theotokos is represented without the Infant-Savior.  There is a visible wound on neck.  At some point in the past, the Icon was decorated with a gilded riza sprinkled with precious stones.  A Greek inscription was engraved in the silver niello frame.  It read: “This holy and revered Icon is a gift from pious Emperor Andronicos Paleologos in Monemvasia.”

The Icon was a historical relic as well.
