Remembering Brother Joseph, Martyred Curator of the Iveron Icon

Yuri Popowski, a Russian physician in Geneva received from the Greek Government a copy of the official report of the autopsy performed on the martyred brother Joseph in October, 1997. Dr. Popowski has kindly given us a copy of this document, which we have translated into both English and Russian. We print these facts so that you may see what awful torture this chosen one of the Mother of God endured before receiving a martyr’s crown.

AUTOPSY

Signs of previous injuries or operations:

The corpse is that of a male complete in formation and somewhat overweight.

We observe that the feet were completely bound at the ankles by a large piece of cloth. Also, the hands were bound at the wrists by a rope, and the mouth was gagged by a rope. The external parts of the body bear the following wounds: Bruises of the eyelids, cyanotic swelling of the face, abrasions around the front of the neck. Signs of suffocation around the interior surface of the eyelids and dried blood around the face.

POST MORTEM

Skull

Contusions of the soft tissue in the forehead and on the front part of the skull.

No fractures of the bones.

Temples, Brain

Intense hyperaemia of the brain [i.e., excess of blood].

Mouth, Neck

Extensive haemorrhagic percolation of the soft tissue of the front and lateral areas of the neck. Complete fractures of the body and the spurs of the hyoid bone.

Ribs, Pleura, Lungs

        Pulmonary congestion - signs of asphyxiation in the lungs, beginning edema.

Pericardium, Heart, Vessels 

        Nothing (in area of the heart)

Peritoneum and the Intestines:  Nothing

Stomach and gastric contents

                Stomach contains food at the course of digestion (potatoes, macaroni).

Liver, spleen, pancreas: Nothing

Urogenital system: Nothing

Pelvic bones:  Nothing

Informative facts

Subject was found murdered in the Grand Hotel, Patision 19 and Verantzou 10. His hands were tied behind the back with a rope. The mouth was bound tight with a rope. His mouth and feet were tied with a sheet.

Comments

Blood and urine were taken for a special toxicological examination.
Toxicological results on separate form.

Eight (8) photographs are attached.

Cause of Death: Strangulation. (Subject was murdered).

TOXICOLOGICAL REPORT

No. 824

Made from biological material from the body of CORTES MUNOZ JOSE

The toxicology report states that tests were made for the presence of drugs, poisonous materials, alcohol, tear gas and other such poisons.

The results were all negative.

CONCLUSION:

In the biological material of the above mentioned deceased the presence of drugs

or poison were not ascertained in the examination for the above mentioned categories, nor was alcohol present.
