In March of 2000, we received the following letter from the servant of God Tatiana Zonta of Mayfield, Pennsylvania:
In answer to your request, I will joyously try to describe the MIRACLE which occurred in Miami in 1993, during the great hurricane Andrew.
We were living in Miami when our parish was visited by the Miraculous Myrrh-streaming Icon of the Mother of God. We were able to become better acquainted with brother Joseph, with whom we conversed in Spanish. He was our guest for three days, and was teaching my husband about ancient iconography. Those were such an unforgettable three days. Grace was palpable within the house, which was completely filled with the sweet smell of a divine aroma, causing the soul to rejoice.
As the result of our association with brother Joseph, we understood that he was a special person, chosen by Our Lady herself for such a difficult spiritual struggle. A copy of the Icon, together with some of the cotton, remained in the Icon Corner, and the entire house was filled with a sweet aroma long after he had departed.
During the night of the powerful hurricane in August 1993, we prayed fervently before the Icon, imploring help and protection. Everything around it thundered, the entire house shook, the wind penetrated everywhere, but the burning lamp hanging before the Icon did not even sway.
The next day, we could see the full horror: trees uprooted, wreckage and water all around. Yet our house and the houses nearby remained intact, although some of them had glass blown out from their windows and doors.
One block away, across the street, all of the newly constructed homes were seriously damaged. Their roofs were ripped off by the wind, and everyone had to be evacuated. Military personnel stood guard and did not allow anyone to cross to that side of the street.
Our rector, Fr. Daniel, told us that the hurricane had come straight at us, destroying everything in its path, and that it had suddenly and sharply turned to the right one block away from us. Was this not a MIRACLE?”
