Living Wills

In October of 1998, among the resolutions passed at the meeting of the clergy of the Diocese of Eastern America was one with respect to medical living wills:

"As Christians, we naturally revere life as a holy gift from the Lord, and recognize that only He has the power to terminate it. At the same time, we do not perceive God’s will in artificially maintaining life through contemporary medical technology when it is entirely obvious that without medical intervention a person’s life cannot continue. We consider it entirely appropriate to terminate artificial life support, after having sincerely prayed, having had discussions with ones spiritual father and with medical personnel, and after having read for the dying the prayers for the departure of the soul. In this regard, we recommend that each parish of our diocese obtain for distribution or sale an excellent brochure on the subject, published by St. John of Kronshtadt Press in Liberty, Tennessee."
